When Will Things Turn For The Kansas City Chiefs?
Outdoor Sports November 10th, 2009The Kansas City Chiefs entered the season with new hope, and with good reason. While the team shouldn’t reasonably expect to make the playoffs in 2009, an improved set of players offensively and defensively should give the Chiefs a little more to strive for than in recent years.
With the signing of Matt Cassel, Kansas City Chiefs fans had reason to be optimistic. Cassel replaced the injured Tom Brady in 08′ and led the team to a respectable 11-5 record, just missing the playoffs. Could Cassel work the same magic in Kansas City?
Enter Matt Cassel, potential savior. Cassel did a tremendous job filling the void left by an injured Tom Brady in New England last season, and led the team to a 10-6 finish that, by all standards, should have brought them to the playoffs.
As the team has struggled to find its way with a steady quarterback over the past few seasons (there’s been Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle, neither of whom could get the job done), perhaps this year would offer some more hope. Actually, there were some very impressive moments with Tyler Thigpen last year, but he’s not the man for the future.
The Chiefs’ defense ranks in the bottom of the league in every major statistical category. When you have QB Philip Rivers, RB Darren Sproles, RB LaDainian Tomlinson, TE Antonio Gates, and WR Vincent Jackson in your own division, it can make for a long season.
The fact that the Chiefs play in a division that hasn’t been good for a very long time (exception being the San Diego Chargers) gives Chiefs hope for the future.
An 0-2 start is far from ideal for Kansas City, who must now face very difficult opponents during the next three weeks. Who would want to play the Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants in consecutive weeks after starting 0-2? “Not I” said the rest of the NFL.
The Chiefs have had success in the past so there is no reason they can’t return to a respectable team once again, it will take some time. I think their offense could shape up nicely with the Cassel and Dwayne Bowe combination.
